Results of an experiment looking at the impact of implementing 20mph streets in Belfast and Edinburgh
Google street view images were compared before and after implementation of the 20mph streets, and liveability measured in terms of safety (for example presence of people, and streetlights), health (eg pharmacy, bicycle racks, green & open space, obstructions to walking), sustainability (eg rubbish bins, public transport, benches), inclusivity (eg mix of building types and places of work), places (eg shops, restaurants, post office), education, traffic/transport, pavements (eg quality of, litter, crossings) and roads. The scores for both cities increased after the 20mph speed limit was introduced, suggesting improved liveability.
